When I first started thinking about my Capstone topic was
about a year ago when I was in Communication Research Methods class with
Professor Xi. I wanted my topic to focus on sports because I am in love with
sports and have been participating in sports since I was young. I am currently
on the Cross Country team here at Dixie State University and I happen to be a
minority which is what drove my topic. My plan was to write about the progress
and the struggles that minorities had to go through to achieve how much
involvement they have now in the sporting industry.
After seeing the options that Professor Young offered off, I
fell in love with the idea of doing something through media, specifically
radio, because I have been involved in the radio program for about 3 years at
Dixie but about 6 years overall. I saw that as an opportunity to use that as a
way of communication with a good audience and I decided to do a podcast. I had
a couple of ideas in mind but after sitting and talking with Eric, the light in
my head went off and I my topic is going to be about athletes and the lack of
respect that some of them have for their respective sports. In other words,
“Players and their trouble egos”.
An example that I’ll provide is the recent Olympic fiasco
surrounding Ryan Lochte and losing all of his sponsorship's. I’ll hold an
episodic podcast that will consist of me speaking about the issues and my
opinions about them and also interview local athletics and what they think
about the whole situation. I am very excited about this opportunity and am
willing to see where this takes me. I will create a Facebook page which I’ll
post the podcast their and other places as well. It’ll take some qualitative
research but I will be prepared and willing to take on this challenge.
